140/140 bull sold, topped at $34,000 to average $9,386

Ben Mayne announced at the end of the sale that “Scomo was right, miracles can happen and thank God for Queensland!”
Buyers and under bidders came from every state in Australia to watch a total clearance of 140 bulls offered to top at $34,000 and average an incredible $9,386. Both Ben and Wendy Mayne were elated with the sale result and believed it was their best result to date considering most of Australia is experiencing such extreme drought conditions. They were so overwhelmed with the Queensland support, they immediately announced after the sale a donation $1,000 to the Sisters of the North Charity for the flood affected cattle graziers in North West Queensland.
Return Queensland commercial buyers were dominant at the sale taking 116 bulls across the border, while NSW, VIC, SA and WA all competed fiercely for the remaining bulls. Lot 74 Texas Western Express N505(AI)(ET) took top honours of selling for $34,000 to the highly recognised Western Australian Angus stud Koojan Hills. The 918kg son of Bangadang Western Express E10 out of Texas’s matriarch donor Texas Undine Z183 ticked all the boxes for the Metcalfe family. He had phenotype, weight for age, the numbers and a history second to none. There were a total 5 flush brothers in the sale that average $18,200 with one being retained for stud duties. His dam Z183 has sold close to $850,000 in progeny without including semen sales of her sons!

The Metcalfe family were so impressed with the Texas program they couldn’t resist buying Texas’s highest ever performing bull to sell through the ring, Texas Pocock P046(AI). Like the Wallaby Player he was named after he is “one hell of a beast” with ADG 1.57kgs/day, weighing 876kgs with a moderate birth weight combined with huge growth, carcase, temperament and A1 structure. Describe as a REAL power bull that would inject serious weight into any herd.

Second top price was $32,000 for Lot 13 Texas Horse Power N229(AI) who was snapped up by South Australia’s Nampara Angus Stud who returned after purchasing in 2017. He was one of Ben’s picks of the sale and Stu and Nat Hann fell in love with N229’s sheer volume, muscling and like his name serious Horse Power. The 964kg son of Coonamble H176 and a grandson of Z183. With a 1.35kgs/day weight gain +8.8 EMA and +137 for 600 day he stood out. 13 sons of Coonamble H176 had a healthy average of $11,300.

Last month the 2017 Sydney Royal Beef Challenge was held in Tamworth and the final results were annouced. We were astounded by the success of our Texas progeny within the competition. It was very special to have our two boys Will and Lachie accepting the awards on behalf of Ben who was away with Rosie at Rockhampton for rowing. For 2 years in a row we have won Grand Champion Domestic Pen, Reserve Champion Domestic Pen (Rosie, WIll and Lachie’s steers) and Reserve Champion Individual. We also won the prestigious RAS Pertpetual Consumer Trophy for Champion Export Taste Test Caracse!

  

This year had the largest entries ever and interestingly our Champion pen was the most profitable and had the highest daily weight of the whole competition which included not only domestic but export entries as well. Their average pen was $454.64 more profitable than the average domestic pen.  Our results are as follows

It was described as the best and heaviest draft of bulls Texas had put up for years and buyers and under bidders travelled as far as WA, SA, NT, QLD, VIC and NSW to see for themselves. Coincidentally it was the Mayne’s 50th bull sale and records tumbled with the highest bull hitting $56,000, well above the 2015 sale top price of $45,000 and achieving the highest price average for the stud of $12,535. Spirited bidding was strong from Lot 1 to the last bull in the ring that sold for $17,000.

Lot 27 Texas Earnan L612(AI)(ET) was the heaviest bull in the sale at 1012kgs and made the top price of $56,000. Chris Knox and Helen Alexander of DSK Angus (pictured below), Coonabarabran, NSW couldn’t resist L612’s power, bone, fleshing and phenotype. He was the highest scanning IMF bull in his contemporary, ranked 1% for 50K growth and CWT, had a daily weight of 1.47kgs since birth, scrotal size 45cm and estimated breeding values (EBVs) +63, +108, +146 for 200, 400, 600 day weight and +2.3 for marbling. His dam Texas Undine H638(AI)(ET), a daughter of Texas’s famous dam Texas Undine Z183, had 8 sons in the sale that averaged $16,000.

 

The second top priced bull was Lot 29 Texas Mt Kaputar M100(AI)(ET), a full ET brother to the previous record holder Texas Mount K2 making $44,000 selling to a syndicate of repeat buyers; Neville Duddy Glen Innes, NSW, Owen Pedlow Highland Court Angus, Glen Innes, NSW and Shane Adams and Vince Larkin of East West Angus, Bingara NSW (pictured below). M100 was described as one of the picks of the sale and with 1.42kgs/day since birth, super set of EBVs (Top 1% and Top 5% for calving ease, scrotal, growth, CWT and Indexes) combined with amazing temperament and phenotype he was popular amongst the bidders. East West Angus also purchased Lot 4 Texas Legacy L177(AI) and Lot 12 Texas Louis Vuitton L618(AI)(ET) for $24,000 and $23,000 respectively.

 

Equal third price bulls was Lot 40 and Lot 94 both selling to $31,000 to repeat commercial breeders. Lot 40 Texas Tour of Duty L282(AI) (pic below left) was an incredibly docile, heavy fleshing, huge growth sire tipping the scales at 962kgs. Cadelga Cattle Co, Inglewood QLD returned from last year’s sale to take him home to infuse back into their herd. Lot 94 Texas Hat Trick L240 sire by Texas Western Express H639 was snapped up late in the sale by Pete and Terry Hanigan of Coonamble NSW.  The Texas Western Express H639 sons were popular averaging $15,000.

Woolbrook heifer’s stole the title for champion pen of weaners at the 2017 Virbac Weaner Challenge and Feature Sale, beating one of the best line-ups ever seen at Tamworth Regional Livestock Exchange (TRLX) and surprising everyone in winning a title usually awarded to steers.

Its was a remarkable result for Woolbrook graziers, Tony and Tanya Haling, “Hillside Park” who make it four years in a row for the presitigious title.

In awarding the title, judge Jeremey Cummins, of Teys Australia, said that the Angus heifers were “a pen like no other, were exceptionally well bred and had a big future in the paddock”.

With the current cattle market booming, entries and interest in this year’s Royal Sydney Beef Challenge was at an all-time record. Last Friday night, the RAS Beef Challenge awards were announced at Tamworth NSW and Texas Angus came home with a swag of ribbons.

  

Following the success of last year when Texas Angus won Reserve Champion Export Pen, profitability, carcase, feedlot trial and the daily weight gain sections, the Mayne family decided to enter pens of Angus heifers and steers to try and back up last year’s success.  Ben and Wendy Mayne were overwhelmed at the achievement of this year’s results.  

One pen of Texas Angus heifers took out Grand Champion 70 Day Domestic Class followed by another pen of their Angus heifers taking the Reserve Champion 70 Day Domestic Pen.  These heifers also placed 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd for individual daily weight gain (DWG) and of the 500 heifers and steers; all breed and crosses, the winning heifer pen were 0.5kg heavier than any other entry.  Also 2 pens of Texas steers placed 1^st and 3^rd in this 100 day export class for DWG.
